A Medical Certificate Online, Without the Waiting Room

Most workplaces, schools and universities ask for a medical certificate when you are away sick, and plenty of people only find that out while they are unwell. EasyScripts lets you request one online. You answer questions about your symptoms, and an Australian doctor assesses your request.

If the doctor decides a certificate is appropriate, it is sent to you by email or SMS, as early as the same day. Single-day and multi-day certificates are available for work, school, university and carer’s leave. EasyScripts issues the certificate. Your employer or school decides what evidence it needs, so check their requirement if you are unsure.

Which Medical Certificate Do Phone or Video Need?

An online sickness certificate, sick certificate or doctor’s medical certificate is a document from a doctor stating that you were unwell and could not work or study. You choose the reason when you complete your request.

Common Reasons People Request a Certificate

An online medical certificate suits most short-term illnesses.
Other symptoms can be added on the form. If your problem is ongoing or needs treatment, a telehealth consultation lets a doctor look at it in more detail.

How an Online Medical Certificate Works

The process runs online from start to finish. The doctor assesses your request the way a doctor in a clinic would, and decides whether a certificate is appropriate.
1
Complete the online form
Say what the certificate is for and who it is for. Select your symptoms and describe how your illness is stopping you from doing your duties.

2

Choose a time and pay
Pick an appointment time and pay online. The fee is shown before you confirm.

3

Speak with one of our doctors
The doctor reviews your answers and talks with you by phone or video. Our doctors are AHPRA-registered Australian doctors, with the same professional obligations as a doctor you would see in person.

4

Receive your certificate
If the doctor issues a certificate, it is sent to you by email or SMS

Certificates as early as the same day

Most requests are processed on the day. A request that needs a closer look can take longer.

Certificates Straight to Your Phone

No paper certificate to collect and no clinic to return to. When one of our doctors issues your medical certificate, it is sent to you by email or SMS.

Open it on your phone and pass it to your employer, school or university in whatever way they accept it.

Will Your Employer Accept an Online Medical Certificate?

That decision belongs to your employer. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains what employers can ask for when someone takes sick or carer’s leave.

Employers Can Ask for Evidence

An employer can ask for evidence of sick or carer's leave, even for one day or less. A medical certificate and a statutory declaration are both listed as acceptable examples.

The Test Is a Reasonable Person

There are no strict rules about the type of evidence. It has to convince a reasonable person that you were genuinely entitled to take the leave.

Awards and Agreements Can Add Rules

An award or registered agreement can say when evidence is needed and what type. Any request has to be reasonable in the circumstances.

A certificate does not guarantee that leave is approved or paid. If you are unsure what your workplace, school or university needs, ask them before you request one. Source: Fair Work Ombudsman, Notice and medical certificates.

What an Online Medical Certificate Costs

From
$55
The fee is shown before you pay, with no hidden costs. This is a private service, so Medicare does not cover it and you will not be able to claim the fee back through Medicare.

If a certificate cannot be issued

A certificate is only issued when the doctor can justify it clinically. If that is not possible, you will be contacted to arrange a telehealth consultation.

When to Seek Urgent Care

Most certificate requests involve a short illness and can be handled online. A few symptoms are different, and a certificate request is not the right step for them.

Chest Pain or Difficulty Breathing

Chest pain or tightness, shortness of breath or severe dizziness need urgent assessment. Go to your nearest emergency department or call 000. This is a recognised medical emergency.

Signs of a Stroke

A drooping face, new weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, slurred speech, confusion or a sudden change in vision. Call 000 straight away. This is a recognised stroke emergency.

General information only. If either of the above applies to you right now, do not wait for an online consultation.

Medical Certificate FAQs

Can I get a medical certificate online in Australia?
Yes. You complete an online form about your symptoms, and an Australian doctor reviews your request. You do not need an in-person appointment. If the doctor decides a certificate is appropriate, they issue it and it is sent to you by email or SMS. Every certificate is a clinical decision, so none is guaranteed.
Your certificate is issued by an Australian doctor with the same professional obligations as a doctor you would see in person. What your employer, school or university accepts is up to them. The Fair Work Ombudsman says an employer can ask for evidence of sick or carer’s leave, and that the evidence has to convince a reasonable person. A medical certificate is one of its examples. If your workplace or institution has a specific requirement, check it before you request a certificate.
Most requests are processed on the same day, and the certificate is sent by email or SMS. A more complex request can take up to 2 days to review.
Certificates are usually issued for the date of your assessment, a clinically reasonable period based on your symptoms, or both. The doctor can limit or decline backdating at their discretion. If you are unwell and need a certificate, request it as soon as you can.
Yes. Single-day and multi-day certificates are available. The doctor decides how many days are clinically reasonable for your symptoms, and a request for more time off than your symptoms support may be declined.
Yes. The form asks whether the certificate is for work, school, university or carer’s leave, and whether it is for you or someone else. Give accurate details about who the certificate is for, because the doctor assesses the request on that basis.
A doctor may decline a request if your symptoms suggest you need urgent care or an in-person assessment, if your answers are incomplete or unclear, or if they cannot justify a certificate clinically from the information provided. If we cannot issue one, you will be contacted to arrange a telehealth consultation, or offered a refund if we are unable to proceed.
Medical certificates start from $55. The fee is shown before you pay, with no hidden costs. This is a private service, so Medicare does not cover the fee.
Your information is protected with encryption and handled in line with Australian privacy law. Only authorised clinicians involved in your care can access it.
A certificate covers a short-term absence. If your illness needs treatment or follow-up, book a telehealth consultation so a doctor can assess it in more detail. The doctor can also discuss related services, such as a blood test or a specialist referral, where they are appropriate.
