What is Iron Infusion Therapy?

Restoring iron levels to support energy and overall health

Iron Infusion Therapy involves delivering iron directly into your bloodstream through a drip. This procedure is commonly used to treat
iron deficiency anaemia, a condition where the body does not have enough iron to produce healthy
haemoglobin and red blood cells.

Iron plays a vital role in transporting oxygen around the body. When iron levels are low, oxygen delivery to your tissues is reduced, which can lead to
fatigue, shortness of breath, and low energy. By restoring iron levels via infusion, many people experience
an improvement in their energy, concentration, and overall wellbeing.

An iron infusion is typically performed in a clinical setting under medical supervision. Your clinician will assess your symptoms, blood tests, and medical history
to determine whether an infusion is appropriate, and will monitor you throughout the procedure to help ensure safe and effective treatment.

For those considering alternatives, Telehealth Consultations offer a convenient way to discuss your iron infusion care with a healthcare provider from the comfort of your home.

01

Rapid Restoration
of Iron Levels

Iron infusions quickly replenish iron stores in your body, making them an excellent option for severe iron deficiency or anaemia that has not responded well to oral supplements.

02

Improved Energy
Levels

By correcting iron deficiency, infusions support better oxygen transport in your blood, helping to reduce fatigue and low mood so you feel more alert and revitalised.

03

Faster Symptom
Relief

Unlike oral iron, which may take weeks to show benefits, iron infusions can provide faster relief from symptoms such as breathlessness, dizziness, and weakness.

04

Gentle on the
Digestive System

Many people experience nausea, constipation, or abdominal discomfort with tablets. Iron infusions bypass the digestive system, avoiding these common issues.

05

Enhanced Physical &
Cognitive Function

Healthy iron levels support brain function, concentration, and physical performance, making day-to-day tasks and activities easier to manage.

06

Customised Dosage
for Your Needs

Iron infusions allow for precise dosing tailored to your blood results and symptoms, supporting optimal treatment and long-term health benefits.

Iron Infusion FAQs

An iron infusion is a treatment where iron is delivered directly into your bloodstream through a drip (IV). It is used to treat iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia when tablets have not worked, are not tolerated, or when a faster improvement is needed.
Iron infusions are usually recommended for people with confirmed low iron levels or iron deficiency anaemia on blood tests, especially if they:

• Do not improve with oral iron tablets
• Cannot tolerate tablets because of side effects
• Need to correct iron levels more quickly (for example, before surgery or during pregnancy)

Your doctor will review your history and blood tests to decide if an infusion is appropriate.
You will be seated or lying comfortably while a small drip is placed into a vein, usually in your arm. The iron solution is then slowly infused over a set period of time, and your clinician will monitor you throughout. The total visit, including preparation and observation, typically takes around 1–2 hours, depending on the product used and your individual plan.
Most people tolerate iron infusions well. Common, usually mild effects can include headache, metallic taste, nausea, or temporary changes in blood pressure. Very rarely, a serious allergic reaction can occur, which is why infusions are performed in a clinically supervised setting with monitoring and emergency equipment available. Your clinician will discuss risks and benefits with you before treatment.
Although both are given through a drip, they are not the same treatment:

Iron infusion:
• Delivers a concentrated iron solution only (no blood cells)
• Helps your body make its own red blood cells over the following days to weeks
• Used for iron deficiency when your iron stores are low

Blood transfusion:
• Gives donated red blood cells or other blood products
• Used when you need an immediate increase in red blood cells (for example, severe bleeding or very low haemoglobin)
• Does not replace iron stores on its own, so iron treatment may still be needed afterward
Some people notice improvements in energy and symptoms within a few days, while for others it may take a couple of weeks as the body builds new red blood cells. Your clinician may arrange follow-up blood tests to check how your iron and haemoglobin levels are responding.
