Consent for Blood Test Requests

This service provides an online assessment and/or telehealth consultation to request blood tests. It does not replace ongoing care with your regular GP or an in-person examination when one is needed. A registered Australian doctor will review your information and decide whether blood tests are clinically appropriate.

What blood tests can be used for

Blood tests may be requested to:

Investigate symptoms (e.g., fatigue, dizziness, abdominal symptoms, weight change)
Monitor known conditions (e.g., thyroid disease, diabetes, cholesterol, anaemia)
Review general health markers when clinically relevant
Follow up prior abnormal results or treatment plans

Important - blood tests are not always requested

A blood test request may not be provided if:

Your symptoms suggest you need urgent care or immediate in-person assessment
The doctor cannot safely justify the requested tests based on the information provided
The request is for tests that are not appropriate, not available through standard pathology services, or require specialist management
The doctor determines an examination or consultation is needed before ordering tests

Your responsibilities (please read carefully)

By proceeding, you confirm that:

The information you provide is true, accurate, and complete to the best of your knowledge
You will disclose relevant medical history, current medications (including supplements), allergies, pregnancy status (if relevant), and any recent test results
You understand the doctor may request more information or recommend a consultation before ordering tests
You will follow any instructions provided (e.g., fasting requirements or timing of tests)

Limitations of online assessments and test results

You understand that:

Blood tests are only one part of medical assessment and may not explain all symptoms
Results may be normal even when symptoms persist, or may show unexpected findings that require follow-up
Some results require clinical context and may need repeat testing or further investigations
The doctor may recommend in-person review or referral depending on results

Safety first - urgent symptoms

If you have severe or worsening symptoms, you must seek urgent medical care immediately:

Call 000 in Australia for emergencies, or attend the nearest Emergency Department.
This includes (but isn’t limited to) chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, signs of stroke, severe weakness, confusion, severe dehydration, or any rapidly worsening condition.

What happens next

If blood tests are approved:

You will receive a pathology request form (or instructions on how to access it)
You may need to attend a pathology collection centre and follow any preparation instructions (e.g., fasting)

If the doctor needs more detail, you may be asked to:

Book a short phone/video consult, or
Provide additional information to complete the assessment
